Lord Elgin visited Athens during the reign of the Ottoman Empire and stripped most of the sculptural decorations from the Acropolis in 1801. The marbles individually were sawed-off from the temple and were mistreated causing many to break. Later on the boat in which they travelled sank during a storm and remained underwater for 4 years since Lord Elgin went bankrupt from his expedition. What was retrieved and survived, was sold to the British government in 1816. Today, they are displayed in the British Museum.
